The beautiful state of Montana has served an incredible significance to the development of the western United States as well as the entire country. Gold however, is the major factor of historical influence for Bozeman. Ironically, Bozeman was founded by men who attempted to get rich off of the gold rush but were never able to make it. The small town was named after John Bozeman who was the originator of the Bozeman Trail that led to the Gold Mines in Montana off the original Oregon Trail. From these odd roots, the town of Bozeman grew larger and more influential and is located in the fastest growing county in the state.
The small town of Bozeman has changed over time. From the original settlers, to the gold rush, and all the ranching and skiing in between, Bozeman has consistently reinvented itself with modern necessities, while still maintaining its western character and historic roots.
John Bozeman, Daniel Rouse and William Beall platted the town in 1864 and in 1866, Nelson Story arrived with 3,000 head of long horn cattle, eluding both Native Americans and the U.S. Army who would have turned him back for his own safety. Fort Ellis was established in 1867 to protect the local settlers and miners but was decommissioned about 20 years later.
The Northern Pacific Railroad reached Bozeman in 1883 and the town's population jumped to 3,500 by 1900.
